One of the most common questions we get asked is what does Keto WOE mean in relation to the keto diet, so we’ve answered this question and a couple more for you to make your life easier!
So, what does ‘Keto WOE’ Mean?
In keto terms ‘WOE’ stands for, Way of Eating. The reason for this is that people are very clear that keto is not a short-term diet plan, keto is a way of eating that you will do for the rest of your life, or at least as a long-term option for your health.
Keto is a WOE as opposed to a diet as you are committing to changing the way that your body burns fuel for its energy. If you are new to keto, you may want to read this beginners guide and this article on ketosis.
However, to keep it simple, when you start eating keto and dramatically reduce your carb consumption to under 20 grams of carbohydrates a day, your body will enter a metabolic state known as ketosis. This is because the body will have exhausted all of the glucose (carbohydrates) stored and the body.
As it has exhausted its current fuel source, it will start looking where it is going to get its fuel for energy from. Once this has happened your body will start producing ketones, ketones will assist you in burning fat, as opposed to glucose (carbohydrates), which it is used to burning.
Once your body is accustomed to burning fat as its fuel source, it will become what is known as being ‘fat adapted’.
This means that your body has adapted to burning fat for fuel and will no longer be looking for glucose at its source of fuel.
Moreover, if you start eating a higher number of carbs over a few days, you will almost certainly knock your body out of ketosis. As a result of knocking your body out of ketosis you will no longer be burning fat for fuel and your body will no longer be in the metabolic state of ketosis.
Furthermore, you are not only reprogramming your body, you are reprogramming your mind. For years (probably most of our lives) we have believed that fat is the enemy and that you have to eat low volumes of zero fat foods if you want to lose, and in some cases, even maintain your weight.
Keto is encouraging you to do the exact opposite of what you have always believed; eat high-fat foods, dramatically restrict carbs and not be too concerned with the calorific value of the food you consume.
It is this dramatic change in the fundamental programming of your body and mind that makes eating keto a way of eating and not just another fad diet.
