Is this peanut butter almond milk chocolate smoothie keto-friendly?

Keto Peanut Butter Almond Milk Smoothie in a clear glass with grated chocolate around it

This is based on a recipe that I used to use which was for peanut butter and banana chocolate smoothie.

For this, I have replaced the banana with avocado.

The avocado gives this smoothie its lovely rich smooth texture and means that this is packed full of good fats, making this keto-friendly.

Is unsweetened almond milk keto-friendly?

Almonds are naturally low in carbs – making them great for anybody living a keto or low carb diet.

If you are trying to keep the carbs low, ensure that you use unsweetened almond milk as opposed to sweetened. Unsweetened almond milk does not have any added sugar. Also, be careful to check the carb counts on the almond milk as some are higher than others.

A good almond milk will have less than 1g of carbs per 100 ml. I buy ASDAs own long life unsweetened almond milk or Alpro Unsweetened almond milk (but only if it’s on offer!!). These both have less than 1 gram of carbs per serving.

Previously, I was using Aldi’s own brand of almond milk, it wasn’t until somebody helpfully pointed out in a Facebook group that this was relatively high in carbs and contained non-keto friendly sugars. Since that time I have reverted to ASDAs.

I don’t go that often, so when I do go I tend to pick up 6 cartons, so I look like a crazy lady. If only they knew it was for this gorgeous, decadent peanut butter almond milk chocolate smoothie, they may not think I was so crazy!

The best keto friendly unsweetened coco powder

In order to give your peanut butter smoothie, its amazing chocolate taste, you will need cocoa powder.

Like almond milk, these come in a variety of qualities – some have a lot of sugar. Some can also leave a bitter aftertaste.

The one I use if from the RealFoodSource and is not full of sugar and other ingredients. This will give your smoothie a lovely chocolatey taste, without adding carbs or breaking the budget! Make sure that once you have opened it, that you store it in an airtight container to make sure it stays dry.

Keto-Friendly Honey

Honey, although a great natural product, is full of sugar, meaning that it is not appropriate for a keto-friendly, low-carb lifestyle.

Never fear, there is such a thing as sugar-free, keto-friendly honey! The Skinny Food Co have us covered! Their sugar-free honey is made with Sulcrose making it keto-friendly. You can find the honey and other amazing keto-friendly products here;

How do I make my smoothie?

This is the really simple bit! In order to make your peanut butter almond milk chocolate smoothie, just place all of the ingredients in a NutriBullet or blender of your choice and blitz until your smoothie is smooth.

What your smoothie on the go?

I will often take this to work with me or will pop it in my handbag if I’m going out to run errands, but know I will need breakfast or lunch at some point.  I have also been known to make this the night before and put it in my flask, in the fridge, ready to go in the morning (always good for those crazy early starts!).
