If you are unsure whether you are dairy intolerant, why not try this….?
- If you are unsure whether you have any dairy allergies, or just wanting to see the impact of cutting out dairy on your keto diet. Why not try this;
- Cut out all dairy from your diet for 30 days (out keto dairy substitutions list below will help you out with this). This will give your body the time it needs to detox from any of the residual effects of eating dairy.
- After 30 days, start by introducing some casein-rich, low-lactose foods, such as cheddar cheese, swiss cheese, and casein protein powder. Throughout the day, and the next morning, assess how you feel. Do you feel bloated, headache, feeling sick, excess wind, diarrhoea? Do you feel better than you did on non-dairy? Or do you feel exactly the same?
- Cut out dairy again for another 3 days
- Day 35 – introduce other forms of dairy like Greek yoghurt, butter and heavy whipping cream (double cream) for 2-3 days. These products also contain whey as well as casein (which you tested the first time). Again, assess how you feel.
- Assess how you felt overall, did you feel better when eating dairy or not?
Another way to determine whether you are potentially intolerant is to gets your blood glucose using a meter. If you are already eating a keto diet you may have one of these. Test your glucose and ketone levels 2 hours before and hours after eating dairy; if your glucose spikes and your ketone levels drop significantly, it may be an indication that you have dairy intolerances.
If you discover that you may have intolerances, please see your doctor in order to have proper allergy tests conducted so you can understand exactly what intolerances you have and what to avoid. Intolerances that are mild at first can develop, which can lead to anaphylaxis, so should be identified at the earliest possible opportunity.
